Walt Disney Pictures presents “Moana 2,” “Avatar: Fire and Ice,” and “Incredibles 3” at its D23 fan gathering.
California’s Anaheim With Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Marvel’s raucous “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Walt Disney, which recovered the top spot at the summer box office, launched its D23 fan gathering on Friday with a live performance from the highly awaited cartoon feature “Moana 2.”
Auli’i Cravahlo and Hawaiian dancers accompanied featured star Dwayne Johnson, who informed the 12,000 spectators that he would be singing “in keys that don’t exist” when he returned as Maui.
Along with “Avatar” stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, director James Cameron joined the stage to unveil concept art for the next sequel, which will be called “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
Pete Docter, the chief creative officer of Pixar, revealed plans to launch “Dream Productions,” a new “Inside Out” series that will center around Riley, the primary character, and take place in between the first two films. The series is slated to release in 2025.
A new chapter in “The Incredibles,” one of Pixar’s best-selling films, featuring a quirky superhero family, was also revealed by Docter. Brad Bird will be directing the film’s third part.
Disney announced a lineup of recorded live Broadway musicals, which includes the popular film “Frozen,” that would be available on Disney. “We’re really happy to announce that the hit musical, which was filmed on stage, will premiere on Disney Plus in 2025,” Chief Creative Officer of Disney Animation Jennifer Lee stated.
According to Lee, the group is also working on a Broadway musical inspired by the movie “The Greatest Showman.”
The new Disney series “Skeleton Crew,” a coming-of-age science fiction “Star Wars” series created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, was given an early peek at D23.
The Disney series’ big-screen adaptation, “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” which is slated for release in 2026, was given an advance look by director Jon Favreau.
Marvel brought back a few of its best-selling titles from the San Diego Comic-Con event last month. The films “Captain America Brave New World” and “Fantastic Four” were on display, along with the upcoming Disney shows “Daredevil Born Again” and “IronHeart.”
In addition, a menacing musical performance by the witches from the show was featured, along with a promo for the new horror series “Agatha All Along,” which is based on the “WandaVision” series. Original music from the gifted people behind “Frozen” and “Coco” can be heard in the series.
The Greek mythology-based television series “Percy Jackson,” which centers on the demi-god protagonist of the same name, is coming back for a second season. Appropriately named “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” it is named after the title of the first Rick Riordan novel.
During a conference call with investors this week, the firm praised the quality of its films, signaling a resurgence after losing its title as the highest-grossing Hollywood studio in 2023.
“Having a big Hollywood comeback is something you can do at any time,” Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian stated. “And they’ve certainly had that.”
“Inside Out 2” has surpassed Disney’s “Frozen II” to become the highest grossing animated picture of all time, with a global box office total of $1.6 billion. After one month, “Deadpool & Wolverine” achieved the greatest domestic premiere of any R-rated movie and has now grossed over $850 million worldwide.
Bryan Kraft, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, stated in a note to clients that “there is of course variability in the film business.” “But if Disney has found its box office magic once again, additional growth may be ahead, as a strong theatrical slate continues.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger praised the company’s theatrical schedule for the ensuing two years, which features James Cameron’s third “Avatar” film, an animated follow-up to “Moana 2,” a live-action adaptation of “Disney’s Snow White,” a reboot of the Marvel superhero franchise called “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and more.

On Friday, investors and fans are expecting further information regarding the Marvel superhero studio’s future plans. After actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of abusing and harassing his ex-girlfriend, the studio was forced to select a new antagonist for their upcoming movies. A few titles had to be postponed as well due to last year’s strikes by Hollywood actors and writers.
Disney announced at last month’s Comic-Con pop culture conference that Robert Downey Jr., star of “Iron Man,” will portray Doctor Doom, the villain from “Fantastic Four.”
